Mushroom extract or powder, which one should you choose?

The biggest difference between mushroom extract and powder is the concentration of ingredients, especially polysaccharides.

Mushroom powder is made by gently grinding the fruiting body, which preserves important nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. The amount of polysaccharides will however be relatively low, only 1 to 3%.

Mushroom extract is made from a coarse mushroom powder by water extraction, resulting in a much higher content of polysaccharides and beta-glucans in bioavailable form. Other ingredients such as fiber and vitamins are mostly lost.

If you’re looking for medicinal mushrooms as dietary supplements, it’s useful to offer both dosage forms. That way your end customers can benefit from all that a medicinal mushroom has to offer.

However, if you’re interested in medicinal mushrooms as part of other foods or beverages, there are some other factors to consider it comes to the choice of extract or powder.

How can you use medicinal mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms are very versatile and can be used in many different ways. This is also reflected in our customer base.

Our customers are manufacturers of dietary supplements, foods and beverages, cosmetics, pet food and sports supplements. All of them are using our products in different ways as a part of their product range.

We’ve collected some examples of how to use medicinal mushrooms, when it’s better to use extract or powder and when it’s better to use a specific mushroom.

Reliable, certified quality from farm to capsule

No doubt you want to offer your customers only the best and safest products. That is our goal as well.

We take great pride in the safety and purity of our products in order to provide our customers with only the best medicinal mushrooms.

Our mushrooms are carefully cultivated by experienced farmers in their original habitat in China, in clean nature, to ensure an optimal growth of vital ingredients.

You can be sure that you will not receive any blended products containing mycelium* or the growing material. We use only the fruiting body to provide you products with the highest potency.

Through extensive analyses, we are able to ensure not only the purity of our products, but also a standardized level of important ingredients such as polysaccharides. You will receive these analyses and other relevant certificates with each order.

*Except Cordyceps, which is grown differently.

What are functional mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms are mushrooms that are not necessarily high in nutritional value, but have many functional or adaptogenic properties that go beyond the nutritional benefits. Examples include reishi and Cordyceps, which are not intended to be eaten, but contain valuable substances such as polysaccharides that may have other health benefits. Studies regarding these potential health benefits have been growing in recent years, as interest towards functional mushrooms has been growing.

Where do we ship from?

We ship all of our orders from Austria, where our warehouse is based.

What are polysaccharides?

Polysaccharides, which include beta-glucans, are compounds composed of multiple glucose molecules and are found in the cell walls of mushrooms. The potential health benefits of mushrooms can be largely attributed to polysaccharides and beta-glucans in particular.

Why our capsules contain acerola?

Studies have shown that vitamin C significantly improves the absorption of the ingredients in medicinal mushroom extracts. The Acerola cherry is one of the fruits with the highest vitamin C content. For this reason, we have decided to add Acerola to our extracts to make our products even more bioavailable.

What is the difference between organic and conventional quality?

Organic quality means that the medicinal mushrooms are grown and processed according to strict regulations that prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Conventional quality means that synthetic pesticides may be used. However, we never use GMOs to grow our mushrooms. Our organic farming follows EU guidelines.

What are medicinal mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms can be seen as a sub-category of functional mushrooms The term medicinal refers to the mushrooms being used specifically in alternative and traditional medicine for their potential health benefits. The mushrooms contain bioactive compounds, such as polysaccharides, triterpenes, and beta-glucans, which are believed to have various therapeutic properties. Research on the medical benefits of such mushrooms is on-going.

Do we offer your products to individual customers?

No, we only sell to businesses and other such organizations.

Why we won’t show the beta-glucan values for our raw materials?

Because there isn’t a reliable method on the market to accurately test the beta-glucan content in mushrooms. Also, the potential of medicinal mushrooms lies not only in how much beta-glucan they contain. So we shouldn’t put so much importance on a value that is mostly not accurate and also one part of the medicinal mushroom quality puzzle.

Is a mushroom product better the more polysaccharides it contains?

The natural polysaccharide content of a mushroom is between 20 and 30%. Therefore, we standardize our extracts to 30%. To achieve even higher polysaccharide levels, the mushroom extract must be made stronger. It must be repeatedly treated with ethanol or other extracting agents, which means that a lot of the natural ingredients of the mushroom are lost. Also, many mushroom products with higher polysaccharide content most likely also contain polysaccharides not derived from mushrooms.

What is the capsule hull made of?

The capsule shell is made of cellulose. We do not use any capsules made gelatin derived from animals.

Why do mushroom powders/extracts from one species sometimes have a different color?

Our medicinal mushrooms are grown on natural growing materials such as wood or straw. As the type of wood is not important, we use different types of wood that sometimes differ in color. Oak wood, for example, is relatively dark, while apple trees provide a very light-colored material.

In their capacity as chemosynthesizers, the mushrooms absorb the different dyes from the growing material and store them in their cells. After drying and grinding, the different colors of the growing material result in differences in the color of the powder or extract. This does not impact their effectiveness in any way.
