Brief profile:
Enoki thrives best in the cool regions of the northern hemisphere - even in winter. It is easy to cultivate, which is one of many reasons it is becoming more important as a medical mushroom. It contains numerous nutrients: in addition to polysaccharides, various vitamins, linolenic acid and triterpene enokipodins were identified. It is an excellent supplement for a balanced diet both as an edible mushroom and as an extract in capsules.
A special honour was bestowed on Enoki in the context of space exploration. A representative of this genus took part in the 1993 Spacelab mission D-2 in order to study the impact of gravity on the growth of mushrooms.
